Unallied Management Projects

Unallied Management Projects

Projects under this program provide economic, sociological, public policy, and other information needed by Federal and State natural resource administrators for conserving and managing fishery resources and protected species and their environment in Federal, state, and U.S. territorial waters.

In the Southeast, this program has funded life history research on red drum in South Carolina and shark research in the Gulf of Mexico and along the coast of the southeastern U.S. The shark investigations, conducted by the Center for Shark Research, have centered around shark nurseries in U.S. and Mexican waters and tracking the movements of sharks. Unallied Management Projects have also funded studies to more accurately determine fishing effort in the shrimp trawling industry and to better determine the parameter in red snapper stock assessment. Information gained by the above projects is vital to our ability to properly manage these fishery resources.
