NOAA Fisheries Reminds Atlantic Federal Charter/Headboat

Permit Holders of Renewal Requirements

For persons on a charter vessel or headboat to fish for or possess Atlantic dolphin/wahoo, Atlantic coastal migratory pelegics, and South Atlantic snapper-grouper in federal waters, a federal permit must have been issued to the vessel.  NOAA Fisheries reminds permit holders that those permits must be renewed each year.  The permit expiration date is printed on the front of the permit.

Persons may not fish for or possess those species on a charter or headboat trip if the vessel permit is expired.  Persons who fish for or possess these species on a vessel with an expired permit may be subject to penalties.  Expired permits must be renewed; permit renewal applications are available on the web at: http://sero.nmfs.noaa.gov/operations_management_information_services/constituency_services_branch/permits/permit_apps/documents/vessel/VesselEEZApplication.pdf.  NOAA Fisheries mails a renewal notice to the permit holder about two months before the permit expiration date.  However, it is the permit holder’s responsibility to renew the permit regardless of whether or not they receive a notice.

The application for renewal should include all supporting documents, including a copy of the vessel’s unexpired United States Coast Guard document or, if not documented, the vessel’s unexpired state registration.  Also, the Permit Office will confirm compliance with all applicable logbooks, effort surveys, economic surveys, gear reports, and landing certifications, so permit applicants should ensure these reports have been submitted in accordance with their respective instructions.
