Endangered and Threatened Species Coordination
Deepwater Horizon/BP Oil Spill Response
NOAA Fisheries Service is coordinating with our Federal partners on endangered and threatened species concerns resulting from the Mississippi Canyon 252 Oil Spill (Deepwater Horizon BP oil spill) in the Gulf of Mexico. The Endangered Species Act (ESA) and its implementing regulations recognize the necessity to respond immediately to emergencies and provide expedited coordination that allows Federal Agencies the latitude necessary to complete their emergency responses in a timely manner while still providing the protections afforded under the Endangered Species Act. We continue to coordinate with the ongoing response effort by advising on listed species and habitats in the response area, and devising best management practices to reduce the impacts to listed species and their habitats resulting from the Deepwater Horizon BP oil spill.
